Rare and wonderful, 1860's Civil War Sixth Plate Cased Tintype Photograph of an armed, Union Cavalry Soldier displaying a large Bowie Knife!! This outstanding, period Tintype Photograph measures approx. 2 5/8" by 3 1/4" and is housed in what appears to be its original, pressed leather covered hard case.
The Tintype is a wonderful, full length, standing portrait of the Soldier wearing an enlisted man's frock coat and a kepi with a bugle form, infantry insignia. He strikes a rather aggressive pose with his right foot thrust forward and the Bowie Knife displayed in an "attack" position held at shoulder level in his right hand. Neither the soldier nor the photographer is identified in any way. This very rare and wonderful, Civil War Tintype Portrait of an armed Union Army Soldier is in very good condition.The focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich and warm. The Tintype is clean and crisp and well preserved with no bends and no significant surface scratches, scuffing or damage of any kind and no repairs. There is some relatively unobtrusive "alligatoring" to the surface likely caused by exposure to heat at some time in the past.
The surface is sound and stable with no active flaking. Overall the Image is very well preserved and displays beautifully!! The pressed leather covered hard case is in very good condition with light wear only.
