Very rare and original, 1867 Large Size Civil War Subject Chromolithograph featuring fantastic views of the Philadelphia Volunteer Refreshment Saloon - a Sanitary Commission style establishment that tended to the needs of Union Civil War Soldiers departing the city of Philadelphia and returning to the city after being mustered out of service. This wonderful, Civil War subject Chromolithograph measures approx.

32 by 23 (including what appear to be its full, original margins). It is titled View of the Philadelphia Volunteer Refreshment Saloons. This wonderful, large size Chromolithograph features six, individual scenes including the largest which is a bird's-eye-view" of the "Volunteer Refreshment Saloon, SW corner of Washington Ave. (as titled) depicting masses of Union Troops in uniform and formation lined up outside and around the extensive buildings and tents of the Saloon.

Other Images include Views titled Washing Department Corner of Washington Ave and Swanson Sts. ", interior of "Cooking Department Corner of Washington Ave and Swanson Sts. " and "Interior of Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon, corner of Washington and Swanson Sts. Showing the rows of tables set for feeding the soldiers with a large number of male and female volunteer setting places for the soldiers. Interestingly, the final 2 views were printed on separate sheets and mounted onto the Chromolithograph. These views are titled "View of the Union Volunteer Refreshment Committee Hospital" and "Interior View of the Union Volunteer Refreshment Committee Hospital". The edges of other Views printed on the sheet itself can be seen beneath the affixed Views and we have located another example of this Chromolithograph from which we have determined that the views that are covered up include a View of the Cooper Shop and a view of the interior of the Cooper Shop. At some point during the War, the Cooper Shop was turned into a 12 bed Hospital Ward known as the Cooper Shop Hospital Hospital and the publishers of this Chromolithograph substituted views of the location as a hospital for the original views of the Cooper Shop itself. Each of these are highly detailed views show the activities associated with each department - soldiers washing-up, Zoaves waiting to enter building, interiors with long tables in dining halls. The bird's-eye-view shows lines of troops marching down the street along side a passenger train, and other troops lined up waiting to go inside for refreshments. An awning on the building reads "Hot Coffee and Refreshments for the Union Volunteers" and "Water" is printed on four canopies. Wilson and carries the mark of the lithographer - J. There is also a slug that reads Printed in Colors by T. Beneath the title of the Chromolithograph there is a rather long list of names of the board of Directors of the Union Volunteer Refreshment Committee.

Philadelphia was host to tens of thousands of soldiers from throughout the northeast who came to Philadelphia for transportation south, by sea and by rail. Soldiers praised the food and the hospitality and the efficiency of the female staff.

The Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon often served up to 15,000 meals a day. The sick and the wounded also arrived here. Philadelphia was the nations major medical center and had over twenty hospitals in operation during the war years, from the eleven bed facility at the Cooper Shop Hospital to the 4,000-bed Mower Hospital in Chestnut Hill. About 157,000 men received medical care in Philadelphias hospitals.

This very rare and original, 1867 Philadelphia Volunteer Refreshment Saloon is in very good condition. The original colors are strong and the sheet has some overall age toning. There is no significant physical damage - no surface scuffing and no edge chipping.

The Print retains what appear to be its full and original margins. There is a 3 edge tear that has been repaired using archival, Document Repair Tape on the reverse. With a light, professional cleaning and a quality matting and framing this outstanding, early American Chromolithograph will display as near mint!
