VERY rare and simply fantastic, 1860s Civil War Quarter Plate Tintype Photograph of a armed Union Army Soldier!! This outstanding, period Tintype Photograph measures approx.
3 1/8 by 4 1/8 and is housed in one half of what appears to be its original, leather covered Hard Case with original matt and binding and cover glass. The Tintype is a wonderful, full length portrait of the Soldier wearing an enlisted man's frock coat and kepi and holding his rifle with fixed bayonet upright with his right hand. He also wears a leather cartridge box at his belt, a brass, oval "US" belt plate and a round brass breast plate. This appears to be a grizzled, experienced soldier with a look on his face that we have often seen worn by those who have "seen the elephant". Neither the Officer nor the Photographer are identified in any way. This very rare and wonderful, Civil War Tintype Portrait of an armed Union Army Soldier is in very good condition. The focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich and warm. There are scattered small surface blemishes and short scratches mostly confined to the background area as can be seen in the scans below.
The surface is sound and stable and the half leather hard case is worn. A rare and wonderful, 1860s Civil War Quarter Plate Cased Tintype Photograph of an armed Union Army Soldier and a fantastic addition to any collection!
