PORTER WHO SERVED AS A VOLUNTEER IN COMPANY C. 44th ILLINOIS INFANTRY UNION ARMY FROM AUGUST 1861 TILL JANUARY 3,1863.TIN TYPE PICTURE WAS SENT WITH THE LETTER OF INQUIRY BY MR. PORTER IN HOPES THAT IT WOULD AIDE IN THE RECOGNITION OF HIS SON. ALONG WITH THE RETURN LETTER AND PICTURE WAS THIS COLORFUL UNION DEFENDERS CERTIFICATE LISTING THE BATTLES. THAT JAMES PARTICIPATED IN, PEA RIDGE MARCH 6,7,8 1862 AND CHAMPIONS HILL OCTOBER 8, 1862. IT APPEARS THAT THIS CERTIFICATE WAS. PREPAIRED AND WRITTEN AND SENT BY EDGAR J. DAVID UNDER THE INSTRUCTION OF CAPT.
