Compacting folds but the writing is very strong and the paper shows no tears. Below is the letter translation.

Military Division of the Mississippi. Your very welcome and interesting massive of 3rd just was received in due time. I can hardly conceive how it was that you selected my letter from the many as for one of your correspondents. I'm such a poor letter writer at best. I have written to many unknown correspondents and without flattery I must say your letter pleases me better than any one I have yet received.

Don't like to see young ladies at sixteen appear older than their mother and ill enough to fight like a cat and dog every time they come near them. I also have a good ear for amusement fun and have a splendid voice for corn bread. The fourth passed away with but little transpiring to note the anniversary. Military procedures, speeches and salutes from the forts was about all that was on the programs of the day here.

The day was very warm and they had nothing good to eat at the grove so I thought I could enjoy myself as well by sitting in the office. You wish to know my former place of residence, my home is in McDonough Co. Illinois is my native state Cora. I can hardly write at all this evening my idea ability is so very dull. If you know anything about the complaint you will surely sympathize with me. Since my first was written, I have received in detail as clerk in the Quarter Master's Department.

If you are I'm sure this letter will be a good subject. You see I have dispersed with etiquette so far as to trespass on the fourth page. Hope you will do the somewhen you reply should it meet your pleasure to reply. Have been writing in the office all day.

If I have failed to meet your expectations, don't despair. Hope to do better after better acquainted. You seem to have made a mistake in my name (see signature). Please give true name in next.

I shall be happy to hear from you again soon. Address in care of Capt. Miss Cora Clarksville, Clinton Co Ohio.
