General Lee's Army had crossed the Potomac after the Battle of Gettysburg and retreated to the Shenandoah Valley in 1863 , with Meade's last effort to block Lee's escape failing on July 24 at Front Royal and Manassas Gap, Virginia. An original Confederate Army Receipt issued at Staunton, Virginia, July 24, 1863 just at the end of the retreat, for 3 pairs of shoes issued by Captain Fleming Landry to Major HM Bell at Staunton.
