Lemuel & Amaziah Foss of Strafford, New Hampshire served in the 13th New Hampshire, both surviving the Battle of Fredericksburg, but Amaziah died of wounds 5 months later at Providence Church, Va. An original Civil War letter from their father Woodbury M Foss at Strafford, NH, Oct 19, 1862- he is relieved they are safe, the news reports the Baltimore citizens offered soldiers poisoned cakes, he sends greetings to comrade Joseph Prime, has written to Lemuel of the theft of his horse pistol, etc, and Father prays he and Lemuel may be spared. 3pp ink, 8 x 5. Edge wear, age spots, Overall VG. Comes w service info- the brothers were at Falls Church, Virginia at the time, Lemuel survived the War, Amaziah was killed in action at the Battle of Providence Church, Virginia seven months later, May, 1863.
