THE TRIBUTE BOOK A Record of the Munificence, Self Sacrifice and Patriotism of The American People During the War For the Union. FIRST EDITION Published in 1865 by Derby & Miller, New York. 10½ x 7½ stamped leather binding with gilt decoration, full gilt edge pages, decorated endpapers. Condition: VERY GOOD ANTIQUE CONDITION.

Leather exterior has some wear as shown in photos. Boards firmly attached, inner hinges strong. Pages are clean and complete. There are no torn, loose or missing pages. A superior example of this very rare 154-year-old Civil War title.

THE TRIBUTE BOOK records and commemorates the organized volunteer and relief efforts of American civilians during the Civil War. It is a public tribute to the many charitable institutions, hospitals, and civilians whose Munificence, Self-Sacrifice and Patriotism provided direct medical assistance and financial support to the Unions war effort.

Prominent among these was the United States Sanitary Commission, a private relief agency created by federal legislation to support sick and wounded soldiers of the Union. It furnishes a true portrait of American patriotism and selflessness in a time of national crisis.

Published in 1865, the year the war ended, THE TRIBUTE BOOK was written by the prolific and well-known 19th-century historian and author Frank Goodrich. Its a large, heavy book bound in leather and decorated with gilt. The book contains illustrations by the famous 19th-century illustrator Thomas Nast (who is acclaimed for his classic Santa Claus illustrations and is also said to have drawn the first-ever illustrations of Uncle Sam). In order to give you the most accurate description of this very rare volume, I have provided some helpful details below, starting with the Contents.
