Confederate Civil War Soldier Photograph Ambrotype

This item is a period photo from the Civil War of a Confederate soldier (supposedly a Thaxton from Tennessee). It is an image on glass Ambrotype? The frame is copper and measures 3.5" x 2.75", the oval photo is 2" x 2.5". The covering glass is cracked on the upper left hand corner. I know little about it other than what I was told when I bought it and have already noted above.

This photo came in a lot with four photos of women in 1850's-60's dress. The photograph is very clear but I cannot make out the pattern on the buttons.
