This comes with a four page soldier's letter home datelined April 29th 1865 Camp of the 189th NY Vol on the South Side Railroad near Wilsons Station & 21 miles from Petersburg.
Collector note as follows: This soldier's letter was written shortly after the surrender at Appomattox Court House April 9, 1865. Lincoln had just been assassinated, and this volunteer soldier stated: When we heard of his death we was drawn up in line & the notice of his death was read by the adjutant after wich the chaplin made a prayer...
