Cased Ambrotype or Tintype image of a Civil War Union Soldier in frock coat uniform and kepi, ca. This is a Sixth Plate size with hand-coloring in the cheeks and gold gilding on the buttons. The brass mat and preserver are heavily embossed with superb details throughout. The Thermoplastic Union Case case depicts an oval shield and ribbon of stars within a rectangular framed border. The reverse case is identical.
The original paper label is also present beneath the image. Literature: Krainik's Union Cases, 1988 ed. Condition: Very Good to Excellent overall. Slight edge and corner wear on the case, as shown. The interior red velvet liner shows light wear.
Hinges and clasp are original, tight and in excellent working order. The image is slightly off-center but in very good condition; quite clear with crisp details. A small imperfection near the soldier's right armpit, and minor discoloration on the perimeter noted for descriptive accuracy.The brass mat has some areas of tarnish, notably near the cannon (lower right).
