Special 19-pc Lot Of CIVIL War Soldier's Letters To Wife And Children + Photo

SPECIAL 19-PC LOT OF CIVIL WAR SOLDIER'S LETTERS TO WIFE AND CHILDREN + PHOTO! (Also included are two letters from Francis M Nash from Annapolis, and fellow infantryman Patrick Roney regarding confirmation of Luther Covey's death, a Temperance booklet with Luther Covey's name, and listing of other members). A family descendant (great-great-great grandaughter) of Luther Covey has provided this rare lot of 19 Civil War letters, including a copy of a photo of Luther Covey. Luther enlisted in the Union Army in Lebanon, Wisconsin on Feb 22, 1864. Luther was part of the 7th infantry.

He was killed during the Battle of The Wilderness in Virginia May 5th-7th, 1864. The first day of fighting in the Wilderness proved to be difficult for Luther's regiment, as they suffered severely. Grant pressed an attack on the confederate's first line and captured the colors of the 48th VA. As the day drew to a close and darkness ensued, the battle was postponed until the early morning hours under fog, when Luther's regiment participated in a heavy attack upon the font-line Confederates, and was the only regiment to successfully hold the confederate first-line of breastworks.

Luther was shot during this 3-day siege with a min-ball to the hip. According to the letter written by fellow infantryman Patrick Roney, Luther Covey was taken to the field hospital where Doctors were unsuccessful in removing the mini-ball from his hip. According to Roney's letter to Luther's wife, Roney lost contact with Luther during a confederate surge that caused all who were mobile to flee, leaving some speculation of whether Luther died as a prisoner. What makes this offering remarkable, is that it contains his letters written from the time he was mustered to Camp Randall, to just a few days before being wounded and subsequently captured. In fact, when his wife Delia received his last letter written on May 1st, Luther was living only in words well after his death.

Even more remarkable, the leeters contain historical details concerning the advancements of Union soldiers, locations, names as well as skirmishes and conquests. This is your chance to acquire this amazing piece of American history for your collection!
