It contains a Preface by the author and chapters on: The Failure at Winchester, To Conrads Ferry and Return, Life near Frederick Town, In the Valley, The Retreat and the Return, Movements Under General Pope, Cedar Mountain, Popes Retreat, the Antietam Autumn, the Fredericksburg Winter, The Preparation Spring, To Chancellorsville and Return, On the Rapidan, From the Rapidan to the Tennessee, and Life in Tennessee. The book is bound in textured, brown covers with blind-stamped lined highlights and a gold, background image with the title on the spine. The book is clean and it has solid binding throughout.

The exterior has no bumping, but has light rubbing and light edge wear to the spine tips. The gold lettering/image has faded some, but can still be read. The interior is clean and the pages are in excellent condition; they are free of any writing.

There is some light foxing or smudging on a few pages, but most are fine. The book has no stamps or pasteboards.

It is not an ex-library book. The book contains a long, foldout map at the front of the book which depicts unit locations in color as shown. The book has no looseness or lean and both hinges are fine. This is an original, first edition, first-person account of observations by a Union Chaplain during the Civil War.
