Be sure to check out our other vintage photographs in our store. An original vintage ambrotype of an unidentified Civil War soldier. We do not know the soldier's name or unit, or when or where the image was taken. It came from an Indiana estate. The soldier is in full uniform, holding a musket with a pistol tucked into his belt. The last two photos shown here are large scans--there is a visible grain pattern which is a limitation of scanner. The actual image is clearer and sharper than a basic office scanner is capable of capturing. Ambrotypes were used from about 1854 to the mid 1860s, until they were supplanted by cheaper and more durable tintypes.

Ambrotypes usually have sharper images than tintypes, but fewer survive because they were more expensive and the images are applied to fragile glass. Those ambrotypes that do still exist tend to have survived with clearer images than the earlier daguerrotypes. The image is still sharp and clear with wear around the oval frame areas--which is a typical wear pattern on antique ambrotype images.

The glass image plate has no cracks or chips. As is typical with antique images in cases, the bare plate shows some wear and flaws on the outer areas which are normally covered by the frame. The photo is in an original antique Union case and gold frame with original glass cover. This case has a patriotic, military-themed design. The case has a clasp which does not hold shut but is otherwise is very good condition. Dimensions: Case is 3.75" x 3.25".

Image plate is 3.25" x 2.75". The photo and case will be very carefully packed and fully insured.
