Kempf of the Fifth Wisconsin Infantry. On the back of the mount is the photographer's credit for Bogardus, 363 Broadway, New York.

Kempf, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, had been captain of Company A of the original 5. Wisconsin Infantry before being promoted to major of the reorganized 5.

Wisconsin Infantry on September 5, 1864. In period ink handwriting on the front lower part of the photo, Yours truly C.

The photograph is mounted on a stiff paperboard backing measuring approximately 4"h x 2 3/8"w. Kempf was born in Germany approximately 1838, and died in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, January 11, 1899, and buried in the Wood National Cemetery, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
