Charles Spangler and his brother Sam served a year with the 200th Pennsylvania Volunteers and fought in the last great assault by Lee's Army at Fort Stedman, Petersburg, March 25, 1865 were General John Hartranft personally ordered the 200th Pa to hold at all costs; over 100 comrades were killed or wounded but counterattacked and held the line. An original Civil War Discharge for Charles Spangler, A Company, 200th Pennsylvania, issued at Harrisburg, Pa May 26, 1865, lists his birthplace at York, Pa, and signed by Lt Robert Healton, US Army.
