Utside top edge; inside of front cover inscribed in ink. Com: Officer's / Co. Top of front cover has a penciled inscription in different handwriting: Edgar S. Miller / [town indecipherable] / New York.

The 102nd New York Volunteers (the Van Buren Light Infantry) served from Nov. The regiment played a prominent role in numerous key battles in both the Eastern and Western theaters of the war (see last two photos for full unit history). Based on the ink inscriptions, this manual was company property of Co.

D rather than belonging to one specific soldier. The penciled inscription likely is by a later owner, as no Edgar Miller served in the 102nd N. On Ancestry, I found a Edgar S. Please inspect all photos carefully.
