The Age of Reason: Being An Investigation of True and Fabulous Theology by Thomas Paine. Published in 1860 by Josiah. 207 pages preceded by biographical sketch and followed by one page of publisher's advertisements.

Stamped cloth boards in poor, tattered condition - frayed and torn and with loss of cloth. Internally front and rear hinges cracking.

Pencil mark on pg 6; pencil scribbles in margins of pgs 63 and 64; paper loss on pg 27 with loss of text. Downs and end papers grubby with pencil writing on front end papers. Van Dyke written in ink on front paste.

Alva B Van Dyke was a volunteer Union soldier in the 9th regiment, Illinois Cavalry, Company E. Rank in was private; his rank out was quartermaster sergeant. Also written in pencil, faint but legible: Fort Pickering, Memphis. Ten with the date Oct 26th 1864.

Given this provenance it is not surprising that the book is not in great shape; it appears to be. Well read - smudged throughout, damp stained front few pages and several at rear beginning at pg 163.
