1860's AMBROTYPE PHOTO CIVIL WAR SOLDIER HOLDS COLT PISTOL & CAVALRY SWORD

Original 1860's ruby ambrotype of a Civil War Union soldier. He is holding what appears to be a Colt army model of 1860 pistol. Also, he is holding what appears to be a Union Army model of 1860 cavalry sword. We say "what appears to be" on our thought as to the models of the pistol & the sword that he is holding because we are not well versed enough on these two items to tag them with ironclad attributions.

So, please make your own determination as to the specific model types of the pistol & the sword. The soldier wears a rectangular buckle with an eagle design. The eagle is perched with wings partially extended & with the wing tips pointed downward. Underneath the eagle there is a row of eight stars lined up on a band which has an upward curve. When we found this photo a penciled note was with it. The note reads: Louise Elizabeth Myers? We do not know when the note was written. This photo is a fresh Lancaster County, Pennsylvania estate find. This is a 1/6th plate ambrotype (photo on glass) which measures 3 1/4 inches tall by 2 3/4 inches wide. The weight of the ambrotype with metal frame is 1.7 ounces.

The total weight of the ambrotype photo, metal frame, & case is 5.1 ounces. This significant Civil War ambrotype photo is housed in a Union Type hard plastic scenic case.

This case has the Cherub & Stag design with rounded corners. The case is listed in the Berg Photographic Cases Book as # 1-83R. The case has a paper label on the interior of the back section with the following wording: Florence Manufacturing Co. Manufacturers of UNION Daguerreotype Cases. With the Embracing Riveted Hinge.

& CO'S Patent Oct. 14, 1856, & April 21, 1857. The case hinge is loose at the back bottom right corner section. The reason for this is that there is a crack in the case with some separation at the bottom back right corner. This back corner crack is 1 1/4 inches long.

The two front corners of the case each have a fairly tight 5/16 inch long thin crack. Also, there is a fairly tight 3/16 inch crack on the bottom section of the case edge near the top left back corner. There is a super thin & extremely minor scratch on the photo which extends from his chin through the middle of the pistol.

This is so insignificant as to be almost irrelevant & the photo needs to be looked at closely for this to be seen. But, we mention it for accuracy. There are a couple of small scratches on the left top background. There are a few very minor & tiny signs of age on the image. But, generally, the image is in excellent condition. There is some slight original tinting on the soldier's cheeks, the edge of buckle, top of sword, & the edges of his uniform jacket. He sports a large mustache & a goatee & he is in excellent focus. He held the pistol as well as the sword quite still for the photo as they are both in excellent focus. This Civil War ambrotype photo is guaranteed to be entirely original & to date from the 1860's. A superb, powerful, & significant image! This item is inventory #8617. Is an estimate and the actual cost may differ.
