1860's CIVIL WAR 1/4 PLATE CASED TINTYPE PHOTO OF 3 ARMED UNION ARMY SOLDIER
VERY rare and simply fantastic, 1860s Civil War Quarter Plate Cased Tintype Photograph of three armed Union Infantry Soldier!! This outstanding, period Tintype Photograph measures approx. 3 1/8 by 4 1/8 and is housed in a very nice, Gutta Percha / Thermoplastic, Union Hard Case with original matt and binding and cover glass. The Tintype is a wonderful, full length portrait of the "Pards" standing at attention with their rifles at their side.
Each wear identical sack coats, oval belt plates and kepis. The image came with what appears to be a modern notation in the case that identify the soldiers as members of the 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry but we have no provenance to confirm that identification. The Case features an elaborate design that includes fruits, flowers and flourishes but is designated by Berg as Berg 3-17 Geometric. It is very attractive with no significant damage but with ever so slightly bowed rails. This very rare and wonderful, Civil War Tintype Portrait of three armed Union Army Soldier is in good to very good condition.
The focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich although overall the Image is a bit dark. There is a surface scuff in the area of the face of the middle soldier and there is some crazing to what appears to be a very old, varnish coating.
