1860's CIVIL WAR AMBROTYPE PHOTO OF CALVARY SOLDIER ON HORSEBACK WITH REVOLVER
Exceptionally rare and original, 1860s Civil War Quarter Plate Ambrotype Photograph of a Union Cavalryman on horseback in what appears to be a farmyard, with his revolver drawn and pointed toward an unseen target. This exceptionally rare, period Ambrotype Photograph measures approx. 3 1/4 by 4 1/4 and is housed in a very rare, patriotic / military design Gutta Percha / Thermoplastic Case known as "Union and Constitution 2" (Berg 1-188). This wonderful Ambrotype features the cavalryman atop a gray horse - he points his revolver over the horses head but is looking toward the camera.
A second soldier can be seen in front of the horse and set back a little ways. He has his sword drawn and held high striking a pose that can only be described as a Charge!!!There are 5 other men in civilian clothing in the background standing against a wooden fence and in the background behind the horse there is a pig rooting in the mud with his snout! This rare and original, Civil War Ambrotype Photograph is in good to very good condition.
The Photograph exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and a rich, warm tonality but has solarized around the edges creating a "halo" effect that frames the Cavalryman. There surface is sound and stable but there are light surface wipes that are MUCH more noticeable in the scans below than they are when the Image is viewed "in hand" without magnification.
The Gutta Percha hard case closes squarely and latches but has chips on the side panels at the two brass latched, is slightly loose at the hinges and has edge chipping at the center of one edge of the back side.
