1860's CIVIL WAR CDV PHOTO OF ARMED UNION SOLDIERS ONE KILLED IN ACTION KIA
Very rare and fantastic, 1860's CDV Photograph of two Union Civil War Union Army Officers of the 33rd Regiment Massachusetts Infantry - 1st Lieutenant William Prescott Mudge (Killed in Action at the Battle of Wauhatchie in Tennessee, October 29th, 1863) and 1st Lieutenant George A. This wonderful CDV Photo measures approx. 2 1/2" by 4 1/4" (including the original, square cornered card mount). The CDV features a fantastic, full length portrait of the 2 "pards" - Mudge seated on a field camp folding stool and Morse standing next to him with his elbow resting on Mudge's shoulder. Both men are dirty and a bit bedraggled. Both also display their swords. While the CDV carries the mark of the photographer - G. Loomis of Boston - the image was obviously taken in field camp with a canvas tent cloth backing and dirt floor. This CDV is among THE most wonder paper Image field portraits we have ever come across - the composition and the relaxed ease of the officers are something rarely seen even in cased images and it is quite obvious that these officers are both friends and seasoned soldiers. There is a period manuscript inscripting on the recto that reads Lt G. William Prescott Mudge a 23 year-old Clerk from Boston when he enlisted on 6/2/1862 as a 1st Lieutenant. On 8/7/1862 he was commissioned into Company H of the 33rd Massachusetts Infantry. He was killed in action on 10/29/1863 at Wauhatchie, TN during the Battle of Wauhatchie. George A Morse a 29 year-old merchant from Boston when he enlisted on 6/2/1862 as a 1st Sergeant. On 8/7/1862 he mustered into Company H of the 33rd Massachusetts Infantry. He was Mustered Out on 6/11/1865 at Washington, DC. This rare, CDV Portrait of Civil War Officers and Friends is in very good to excellent condition. The focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich and warm.

The Photo is generally clean and crisp while the card mount has some soiling. A very rare, original 1860's CDV Photograph of two Union Civil War Union Army Officers of the 33rd Regiment Massachusetts Infantry - one of which was Killed in Action at the Battle of Wauhatchie and a fantastic addition to any collection!
