Very rare and wonderful, 1860s Civil War Sixth Plate Tintype Photograph of an armed, Union Cavalry Soldier and his horse!! This outstanding, period Tintype Photograph measures approx.
2 3/4 by 3 1/4 and is housed in a period pressed brass matt, shell brass binding and cover glass. The Tintype is a wonderful, full length, standing portrait of the Cavalry Soldier wearing a shell jacket, slouch hat and blue tinted trousers. His right hand rests on the hilt of his Cavalry Sword and there appears to be a revolver in a holster on his belt.
He grasps the halter of this horse and the horse wears an early McClellan Saddle. Both Cavalryman and horse stand on what appear to be an open plain. Neither the soldier nor the photographer is identified in any way. This very rare and wonderful, Civil War Tintype Photo of an armed Union Army Cavalry Soldier with his mount is in very good condition. The focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich.
There is a very light, central vertical bend but otherwise the Tintype is exceptionally well preserved. The surface is sound and stable with no crazing or flaking. The Tintype is housed in a period stamped brass matt, shell brass binder and mid 19th century cover glass (see the scans below). A rare and wonderful, 1860s Civil War Sixth Plate Tintype Photograph of a double armed Union Cavalry Soldier and his horse and a fantastic addition to any collection!
