1860's CIVIL WAR TINTYPE PHOTOGRAPH OF UNION SOLDIER IN GUTTA PERCHA PHOTO CASE

Rare and wonderful, 1860s Hand Tinted, Ninth Plate Civil War Tintype Photograph of a Union Army Soldier!! This outstanding, period Tintype Photograph measures approx. 1 7/8 by 2 1/4 and is housed in hexagonal, gutta percha / thermoplastic Union Hard Case. The Tintype is a wonderful, bust portrait of the Soldier wearing a blue tinted great coat and forage cap - a uniform that is sometimes associated with members of the Veterans Corps.

The Soldier has that far away look in his eyes that we have seen many times in portraits of Civil War soldiers who have "seen the elephant". Neither the soldier nor the photographer is identified in any way.

This very rare and wonderful, Civil War Tintype Portrait of a Union Army Soldier is in very good condition. The focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich. The Image is generally clean with no significant surface damage of any kind. The original hexagonal, geometric pattern Gutta Percha Case has some edge wear as can be seen in the scans below. A rare and wonderful, 1860s Civil War Ninth Plate, Hand Colored Photograph of a Union Army Soldier and a fantastic addition to any collection!
