Original CDV of Colonel William Chapman, by McClees / Addis, Washington, D. Chapman led the 2nd brigade, Sykes division, 11th U. Infantry, through the battles of Malvern Hill and Second Bull Run. Mount is 4.25" by about 2 3/8", slightly trimmed on the sides, though this doesn't touch the image. He served the Regular army with distinction attaining the rank of Colonel.
Graduating from West Point in the Class of 1828, he served in the Mexican War and was brevetted twice for heroism, serving thereafter with the 5th U. After arriving from Fort Bliss, Texas in early 1862, he joined the 2nd U. Infantry as Major where he commanded the 2nd Brigade on the Peninsula, but fell ill due to dysentery and was replaced. He was permanently removed due to illness following the battle, and brevetted a Colonel.
