These were worn by both British and American marines during the Civil War but their origins date back to the Napoleonic wars and even earlier. Made of thick leather it served a dual purpose, one was to keep the soldier chin up giving him a more respectable posture and the other is to protect the neck from cavalry saber cuts. This is where the popular nickname leathernecks for marines at the time is derived from. Measures 3 1/2 at its widest point.Scarce and highly collectable item.
