1862 Confederate Soldier Civil War Letter Richmond Virginia Burnside Fleet. This is a great rare handwritten 2 page letter from Confederate soldier, Henry W Smart in Richmond to Mary Smart in Petersburg, Virginia.
It has the original stamped envelope with it and is in good condition. I was a thinking about you all last night while I was on post, the weather has been very bad for some time past very disagreeable indeed. It is right bad for the yankees no doubt, I see from all accounts their great Burnside fleet met with a great deal of disasters of the coast of North Carolina the great storms lately. I believe the hand of providence is against them inter unholy crusade against the South and if they were wise they would be glad to make peace so I think. I hope the war will end shortly in favor of the south.
I see in one of the papers that England and France are condemning the stone blocked of the yankees and I wouldnt be surprised if they would interfere yet and break it up. I was very sorry to hear that our troops were met with a defeat in Kentucky but I hope we will pay them back with interest before long.
