ABSOLUTE AWESOME CIVIL WAR LETTER! This soldier had alot to say about the goings on in the field to his mother. The soldier was CHARLES MORFOOT ; 101st OHIO INFANTRY; he entered the War as a Corporal and ended it as a 1st Lieutenant. His mother was addressed as Mrs. Morfoot --- Bucyrus, Crawford County, Ohio.

The original envelope - including stamp - is with this letter and is in great condition!!! The letter is undated in and of itself but he mentions that Jonesboro battle has just happened and that Atlanta is taken..... AND the partial postmark on the envelope says its September of 1864.... Although the specific day is blurry.

For the first week in that month.... Consider that the Battle of Jonesboro, Georgia happened on August 31, 1864. On September 2nd, 1864 the city of Atlanta surrendered.

On the 3rd is when General Sherman telegraphed the White House that Atlanta was ours... I won't write out the whole letter but will take a few excerpts here(Using his spelling).... He starts out the letter to his mother with.... I WISH TO GOD WE COULD KILL EVERY DEVIL OF THEM - WE HAVE DESTROYED MANY THOUSAND THIS SUMMER...... THEY ARE IN A WORSE CONDITION NOW THAN EVER HAVE BEEN - THEIR GREAT ATLANTY IS OCCUPYED BY BLUE BRITCHES....

And later he says of Atlanta.... THEIR GREAT COTTON FACTORIES WE BURNT UP THE RIVER - YES - AND CAPTURED ALL THEIR PRETY GALS AND SENT THEM NORTH OF THE OHIO RIVER - AND TO MEND MATTERS WE HAVE DESTROYED THEIR RAILROADS.....

He comments on something that he evidently originally enclosed in the letter - that is no longer with it - because at one point he tells his mother... A REB PO-STAMP I GOT AT THE BATTLE OF JONESBORO FROM A DEAD JOHNEYS HAVERSACK WITH SOME PAPER ETC...

Ok well that's the biggest highlights of his letter.... Oh and he says that a haircut cost him 25 cents.... A great little letter by a soldier who went from Corporal to 1st Lieutenant in the 101st Ohio Infantry! It's also nice that it has maintained its original envelope...

The sheet of paper that he wrote so much on both sides of - is apx 8 x 5 inches. A fascinating and great piece of history to add to your Civil War collection - and his handwriting is pretty easy to read.
