1865 BATTLE OF BULL RUN Civil War SOLDIERS US ARMY Posing Monument Dedication

Here is a nice REAL PHOTO STEREOVIEW showing U. ARMY SOLDIERS POSING by a monument....

The back has the text. THE BATTLE OF BULL RUN WAS THE FIRST GREAT BATTLE OF THE WAR. IT WAS PROPER THAT UPON THIS FIELD WHERE IT WAS FOUGHT, SHOULD BE ERECTED THE FIRST MONUMENT.

THE MOVEMENT TO ERECT SUCH MONUMENTS ON THIS FIELD WAS QUITE IMPROMPTU. THE IDEA BEING CONCEIVED AND DESIGNED BY LIEUT.

BATTERY, AND UNDER HIS SUPERINTENDENCE, THROUGH ORDERS FROM THE DEPARTMENT AT WASHINGTON TO TAKE A DETAIL FROM THE VARIOUS COMMANDS IN THE DEPARTMENT, THE WORK WAS COMMENCED, MAY 6TH 1865. IT IS LOCATED AT THE HENRY HOUSE. IT IS UPON THE IDENTICAL SPOT WHERE GEN. HEINTZLEMAN'S DIVISION MADE THEIR HARDEST FIGHT, AND WAS DRIVEN BACK BY THE ARRIVAL OF KIRBY SMITH'S REINFORCEMENTS.

THE MATERIAL USED IN BUILDING THE MONUMENT IS THE VIRGINIA BROWN STONE, TAKEN FROM THE HILLS, BEING CUT AND HEWED WITH COMMON WOOD AXES. THE FOUR CORNERS AND TOP IS ORNAMENTED WITH 100 POUND SHELL. THE EXPENSE TO THE GOVERNMENT WAS THE COST OF THREE BARRELS OF CEMENT AND TWO BARRELS OF LIME. IT WAS COMPLETED JUNE 10TH 1865. THUS WE HAVE TWO BEAUTIFUL MONUMENTS ERECTED TO COMMEMORATE THE BRAVE SOLDIERS WHO SO WILLINGLY GAVE UP THEIR LIVES THAT THEIR COUNTRY MIGHT LIVE.

THEY SLEEP THEIR LAST SLEEP. THEY HAVE FOUGHT THEIR LAST BATTLE. NO SOUND CAN AWAKE THEM TO GLORY AGAIN. PUBLISHED BY MCCULLUM & BUTTERWORTH. It measures 7" by 3 1/4".

The OSTLIE ARCHIVES watermark is NOT ON THE CARD----I have been having a number of people copy the images It is in VERY GOOD CONDITION with light wear, smudging/staining------------SEE THE SCANS.
