1865 Civil War Letter 14th Maine Soldier Writes of Richmond Evacuation, Mutiny

Offered here is an interesting Civil War soldier's letter home. The letter was written in April, 1865, from Savannah , Georgia. Greenleaf , was on duty with Company F, 14th Maine Volunteers.

Greenleaf was a 44-year-old recruit and in the letter he described events at the end of the war, including fears of mutiny in the ranks and news of the fall of Richmond. I will write you how we left August [Maine]... When we started from Augusta we had men with loaded muskets [and] bayonets on to guard us on the island... Then we was put on the boat with guards. Then we was put in the hole of the boat with a guard...

Until we got out of site of land... We was permitted to come on deck three times a day with guards to watch us... We was landed with guards to watch us threw the street till we was reported in the rain and mud half way over us... We went to the depot where we staid two days then we went to camp where we are now. You would laugh to see how we camp...

Sum had cords to lay on, sum the sand with a little tent cloth over us... The captain and I have one which is very pleasant. We have to sleep with the door and window open most every night... We have very pleasant news this morning that... The letter is written on four pages of a standard 5" x 8" bifolium.

The paper is in good sturdy condition, not stiff, and not particularly delicate even at the folds. Very little wear to edges and corners. Minor spotting, damp staining at upper left corner.
