This is amazing group of letters from a soldier to his wife during the Civil War! There are 26 letters and envelopes and they are ALL ORIGINAL! Some are written in pen and ink and others in pencil. The pencil letters are more faded and harder to read, but the pen and ink are an easy read.
The content is historical as well as sad. Calkins speaks of how lonely he is and how badly he misses his wife. He was with the Union Army of the 10th NY Calvary.
Alot of the letters are from Virginia. He begins each one with "My Dearest Wife".
He writes about family, deaths, sickness, US GRANT, CALVARY, and much more. There are a few letters from the hospital where he went after 2 months of being sick.
