Many of you know us as longtime collectors and sellers of antique and vintage Halloween, Christmas, Valentines Day and Easter holiday memorabilia, paper ephemera, antique dolls and toys, and lovely old china and glassware. We have been given the honor of being asked to sell six authentic and original Civil War letters that were written by a Union soldier to his family back home in Ohio. The soldier, named Charles, (we dont know his last name) wrote these fascinating, historical letters to his sister, Eliza, and his brother, Bill, on Union-supplied embossed letterhead paper with details on his life including details of battle and troop movement. He was a member of Edgertons Battery E, 1st Ohio Artillery Regiment.

3, 1864 reads: The old battery came to Louisville and we all went to it the 26th of Sept and took them far too close. And then we went to Shelbyville and when we got out of town about ten miles we saw a lot of rebels and we fired on them, and Ed and I was in the fight and we went on till we got to Shelbyville and then we start two days and we went out. I was on a scout our battery and a lot of infantry, we went out about 8 miles and had a little brush and took thirty prisoners and killed seven. I saw one that was shot four times.

He was on his horse, and the infantry saw him and four of them shot him and he fell and he had four holes through his body, and he had a shotgun and carbine. Another touching letter from Nov.

28, 1864 reads: I got your letter the other day and glad to hear from you. 17, 1864 he wrote: You wanted to know what was the matter of Ed. He was sick with the fever and died in the hospital the 22nd of December. I wish he was here.

I saw him and got him to go to the hospital. I cant write any more for it is so cold.

To read this if you can for my hand is so cold. One from Bridgeport, Alabama on July 30, 1864 reads: there is a great many wounded going here every day. I wish the copper heads of the north was in my position. It makes me so mad to see how they act. One letter reads Direct your letters to Nashville TN in care of Lt.
