1863, All quiet on the Newport River, S. Skinner writes to his Friend Mate about the playful dealings with Negroes and the capturing of a boat. Also included is a beautiful patriotic cover with a detailed poem that begins, We are coming, Father Abraham.Cover is possibly not associated with the letter. I was right smart glad to receive a letter from you. I have heard of that soldier boy you spoke of. He sometimes dreams of attending paring bees playing snap and Ketcham.
I should like [to have] been with you and Opal on that grand escape you spoke of. I suppose it was a strategic movement. I didnt understand as you captured anybody. I took a tour up the Newport River, four or five miles, up through the woods. We captured a boat up the work in the woodsWe are pleasantly situated at present.
