You are looking at an antique Civil War Soldier's diary from 1865. It belonged to Private William King, a Union Soldier from Ohio's 81st Regiment, Company H. It starts with him marching back toward home, where he stays for a few days before marching to Washington DC and then eventually takes boat to Raleigh North Carolina.
They make a stop in Wheat Swamp Church. He mentions his wife, Sarah King in an early entry. The entries are from January 1st to May 13th, about the war, when he starts heading back home.
He doesn't write every day, but from January to May, most days have at least an entry of them marching to a certain place or where they slept. There are some longer entries and he even mentions waiting on General Sherman's troops to arrive. At the beginning of the diary, there are postal prices, calendars and events. It measures 4 7/8" x 3".
The back cover and front covers are detached, there is some missing from the back cover. The end papers are detached.
The pages are browned from age and some have wear along the edges, a dog ear, chips around the detached pages.
