Today we are delighted to offer for sale a beautiful Civil War-era tintype photograph of a union soldier, complete with stamped leather union case! An early form of photography, tintypes were made by transferring a positive image directly to a thin sheet of metal, which was coated with a dark lacquer or enamel. They were the most popular form of photography in the 1860s and 1870s.
This one is a sixth-plate tintype, which refers to the size of the image. This photograph depicts a young Union soldier, identified as Joseph H. Prime, a Corporal in the 13th New Hampshire infantry regiment.
He is seated, with his right arm resting on a desk or table edge. He wears a hat, and his uniform jacket slightly open.
The image is mounted in an embossed union case with double latch closure. A light red velvet pad with embossed crest on the inner verso side of the case protects the glass-covered photograph. Image is surrounded by a gilt metal mat with elaborate scroll and floral details. The outside of the case has ornate scrollwork and floral designs embossed on both sides, along with gilt trim. Tintype presents in good, as-found antique condition, with patina and some loss of detail on the image due to darkening.Velvet pad has minor discoloration. Union case has wear and minor dings commensurate with age and use, including scuffs, surface loss at edges and loss of gilding.
