A small antique photo album from the Civil War Era. Found in the 1950's. Photos of men, women, soldiers in uniform. 44 photos plus one small photo I believe to be a tintype. Photos are is very good condition.
Pages at beginning and end have tears. Pages are intact but cover has become detached almost completely from the binding.
Album latches as it should and holds the book together. PLEASE VIEW ALL PHOTOS FOR BEST DESCRIPTION. Happy to answer any questions.
Several people have asked questions regarding what, if anything, is written on the back(s) of the photos. The book was found in either Medford, Oregon or Santa Cruz, CA 1952. It was found by my husband's grandfather, a Presbyterian minister who lived in both Medford and Santa Cruz in 1952.
Inside the front cover see photo no. 4 it is written these are evidently family portraits of a family by the names of Mills or Rich. 6, in the left margin is written Phebe (Rich) Mills. This tells me that Phebe's maiden name was Rich and her married name was Mills.
On the back is the information about the photography studio. I hesitate to try to "peel back" the paper frames as it would tear the paper. Most photos will slide a tiny bit but due to age the paper frames are stuck together along the edges. This album, and its contents, is approximately 150 years old. The photos and the album are consistent with their age. My guess is that all or most of the photos were taken at the same studio. How it ended up on the west coast is a mystery to me. Will answer them all either directly or, if able, post with the listing.
