Case measures 3 5/8" x 3 1/8". Black leather case has an embossed pair of birds in a tree in the center on each side surrounded by decorative swirls.
Inside is a tintype of a Civil War Union Bugle Horn Infantry Company B soldier holding a forage cap along with a gun tucked into his belt. US belt buckle and eagle breastplate on a shoulder sling.There is a regiment number inside the bugle (could be 12 or 13). On his hand are several warts and a ring on his finger. Under glass with gold decorative frame. Red velvet cut flowers on the inside.
Hand tinted / painted gold buttons. Arriving just prior to the Civil War, tintypes became the favorite way for a soldier to capture his likeness before heading off to battle. Age / wear appropriate surface scratches. Case opens and closes properly with locking clasps in place.
