Antique Civil War Union Soldier 6th Plate Embellished Tintype +Gutta Percha Case. This is one of many Civil War-era tintypes we will be offering for sale in the coming weeks.
Bookmark our store for more! Today we are delighted to offer for sale a beautiful Civil War-era embellished tintype photograph of a union soldier, complete with gutta percha union case! An early form of photography, tintypes were made by transferring a positive image directly to a thin sheet of metal, which was coated with a dark lacquer or enamel.
They were the most popular form of photography in the 1860s and 1870s. This one is a sixth-plate tintype, which refers to the size of the image. This photograph depicts a young Union soldier in a seated position, wearing his uniform, including a Kepi forage cap and military leathers. His uniform has been embellished in gold at certain points. He stares straight into the camera with a stoic expression. The image is mounted in an embossed union case with metal closure. A dark red velvet pad with embossed scroll design on the inner verso side of the case protects the glass-covered photograph. Image is surrounded by a gilt metal mat with elaborate scroll and floral details. Case has some gilt embellishment.
Tintype presents in good, as-found antique condition, with patina and some loss of detail on the image due to darkening. Union case has wear and minor dings commensurate with age and use, including scuffs, minor loss of gilding and surface loss at edges and corners. Metal closure works but requires some pressure to open case.Case has some splits on edges. What a fantastic addition to any antique photography or Civil War collection.
