C1866 CIVIL WAR SOLDIER / NAVY SAILOR AMPUTEE w DONATION ORGAN, FT FISHER BATTLE
C1866 CIVIL WAR SOLDIER / NAVY SAILOR AMPUTEE w DONATION ORGAN, FT FISHER BATTLE. Circa 1866 Patriotic CDV (carte-de-visite) Photograph; Portrait of a young boy holding an U. American Flag, along with a man who has lost parts of both arms. Both wear Naval style sailor's uniforms. The man wears medals on the breast of his shirt and is carrying a box harnessed around his neck. Presumably, a box for donations, with the words, "Remember the Battle of Fort Fisher". In between these two people is a barrel organ cart with mounted flags and a framed sign which reads, "MUSIC".

Photograph by Bonta & Curtiss of Syracuse, New York (see backmark). Period ink manuscript on the reverse, "The Armless Sailor Lost arms at the Battle of Fort Fisher". Certainly a thought provoking image that makes one wonder about the post Civil War life of an enterprising disabled veteran. Approximate size is 2-1/4" x 3-1/2".

Condition: light soiling and toning. Clipped corners on mount board for easier insertion into a photo album page of the period.
