Ninth-plate (1/9) ambrotype of a soldier.. Under magnification it looks like the buttons of his jacket still have some gold paint on them.
So it's possible he was a Hatfield. Behind mat and glass in full case, complete with clasp, covers separated along spine. Ambrotype is in very good antique condition. Those light areas on his jacket and under his chin are not damage to the image emulsion.... The black paint on the back of the glass has just flaked away there, so those areas appear lighter in my scan...The image itself is not damaged.
