CIVIL WAR 124th NEW YORK ORANGE BLOSSOMS LETTER WOUNDED SOLDIER TO CAPTAIN

Becraft was wounded in action on 5/3/1863 during the Battle of Chancellorsville and wrote the letter while recovering from his wound at St Aloysius Hospital. Becraft writes: JULY 10th 1863 WASHINGTON D. HUNT, CALISTER, H QUACKENBUSH, HERE IN THE CITY LAST WEEK I WISH YOU WOULD SEND MY DISCRIPTIVE LIST SO I CAN GET MY PAY THAT IS IF YOU CAN I HAVE NO MORE TO WRITE RITE SOON AND LET ME KNOW HOW YOU ARE MAKEING OUT AS EVER YOURS, WM. I left the transcription spelled phonetically with no punctuation as it is in the letter. This is a very historic 124th New York civil war letter as it mentions the Colonels being killed at Gettysburg.

Also the patriotism of this wounded soldier is incredible stating that if he is ever fit for duty again he wants to do it in Company "D". The 124th New York was a very hard fighting Army of the Potomac regiment and it is widely accepted that author Stephen Crane based his book The Red Badge of Courage on the civil war exploits of the 124th New York.
