Corporal Hyatt was wounded in action at Devil's Den on July 2nd 1863 during the Battle of Gettysburg. Lot includes Hyatt's original State of New York Volunteer enlistment and also his Hospital furlough document while recovering from his Gettysburg wounds. The vintage documents have been professionally framed using acid free matting & UV museum glass. The back is exposed using thin plexiglass so the backs of the documents can be seen. The documents are in solid original condition with expected period folds and some slight age toning & soiling.

I told the framer to not use any tape but she used a very small approx 1 inch strip of tape at extreme top edge of documents. I had a similar set framed and removed them and there is just the tiniest strip of mounting tape at the extreme top edge which can be trimmed off easily if desired when removed from framing. Documents were originally obtained in the archive of Captain James Benedict, commanding officer of Company D. The overall size of the framed piece is 21.5 x 17.5 inches.

The 124th New York "Orange Blossoms" were a very hard fighting Army of the Potomac Regiment and it is widely believed that the 124th NY were the basis for Stephen Crane's book The Red Badge of Courage.
