Private John Smith of Brighton, Wisconsin, Kenosha County, served 3 years in the war and was discharge d February, 1865. The 1st Wisconsin cavalry saw action through out the War, from Arkansas to Georgia.

The Affidavit is sworn to by 3 Brighton residents attesting his statements can be relied on. This affidavit was issued to enable the father to claim support funds for the Wisconsin Act for the Relief of the soldier's families. The front and reverse both bear an affixed 5 cent US Internal Revenue stamp, 2pp 8 x 12 on lined paper.
