The 21st Indiana Infantry Regiment, known as "The Jackass Regiment" served as Infantry from April 1861 to May 1863 when it became the 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery & fought at the Battle of Baton Rouge & in the Louisiana Red River Campaign. An Original Civil War Union Army Discharge w illustration of eagle & stars, issued to Company D Private Samuel C Owens, 21st Indiana Infantry of Linton, Greene County, Indiana, at Baltimore, Maryland, Oct 26, 1861, discharged for Disability, signed by Captain James H Garrett, also signed by Surgeon Ezra Reed.

The Discharge is signed on reverse by AAG Daniel Tompkins Van Buren (Son of President van Buren and a Brevet Brigadier General) and by US Army Surgeon Charles Page (a notable Union Army doctor and Chief Medical Officer of the 2nd Army Corp during the Appomattox Campaign). Comes w service info- the 21st8 x 11 ptd/ink, w eagle illus. Edge wear, age stains, Overall VG.

The 21st Indiana serving in the Trans-Mississippi received it's sobriquet as it served as infantry. Cavalry and artillery using jackasses for transport animals.
