The 21st Indiana Infantry Regiment, known as "The Jackass Regiment" served as Infantry from April 1861 to May 1863 when it became the 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery & fought at the Battle of Baton Rouge & in the Louisiana Red River Campaign. The Discharge is signed on reverse by AAG Daniel Tompkins Van Buren (Son of President van Buren and a Brevet Brigadier General) and by US Army Surgeon Charles Page (a notable Union Army doctor and Chief Medical Officer of the 2nd Army Corp during the Appomattox Campaign). The 21st Indiana serving in the Trans-Mississippi received it's sobriquet as it served as infantry. Cavalry and artillery using jackasses for transport animals.
