CIVIL War 27th Pennsylvania Soldier Letter Sharpsburg Maryland 1862

An Original Civil War Letter with Transcript from Captain James Cornell Biddle, to his "own darling Gertrude" in Camp Near Sharpsburg, Oct 26, 1862- they have been suddenly ordered to get ready to move to Berlin, on the line of the Baltimore and Ohio R. R, a short distance below Harper's Ferry. We had expected to cross the river at Shepherdstown and concentrate our forces at Martinsburg, and do not see what is to prevent the Rebels again coming into Pennsylvania- it is a horrible day fro marching. He wishes he were with her sitting at the head of her pew, wishes to always be a good husband to her. He plans to send this letter to Frederick by one of the orderlies, and wishes for more of her letters.

He has tried to visit Tom's camp, complains of cold feet and wishes he " had some warm place to tuck them away". The one consolation in thinking of the suffering of our troops in this horrid weather is that our enemy suffers more- he wished the South would show some sign of returning to reason, oust Davis & the leaders of the Confederacy and return once more into the Union, He asks re health of family members, gives his love to them and asks she take good care of herself. 4pp ink, 8 x 6.5, w minor age stains.

Comes w service info- he served 1861-Nov 1863 when he was promoted to the staff of General Meade from the Gettysburg Campaign to the War's End. Taken prisoner once by the Confederates, he survived, to end the War as brevet Colonel for the fall of Richmond and surrender of General Lee.

He came from a notable Philadelphia family and was the husband of Gertrude Meredith Biddle. NOTE: Any repair to a paper item is listed. I use only museum curator approved archival repair tape. All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be authentic and in the condition as described.
