An original and lengthy manuscript Civil War soldier's letter from "Aaron" to his friend, Miss Addie Jones, home in West Wilton, New Hampshire. This well written letter is dated 8th Regiment New Hampshire Volunteers. He sought out a mutual friend named Frank in the 12th Connecticut Regiment, as well as other friends. There are a large number of troops and tents from many regiments, which he names, and he gives a great description of the camp. The fine white sand on the Island blows around and gets into the eyes, the food and everything so the camp looks like a huge city of sugar.
The Rebels burned the fort and houses before leaving the Island, and had painted black wooden cannons. The soldiers need to carry wood about five miles from the woods to the camps.
More details about camp life follow..... According to the family where this letter came from, "Aaron" was Aaron Smith, a musician with the 8th New Hampshire. Eight pages, size 5" x 8", folds, original envelope, well written...... They also served at Bayou Teche, the Siege and Assault on Port Hudson, Baton Rouge and the Sabine Pass Campaign.
