Rare find ambrotype of Identified Ohio soldier!!! Ninth plate ambrotype of George P Wintersteen 1st Ohio Artillery Battery C. Cover glass is a bit dirty. Found behind the picture is a note written by the solider himself... It reads - This picture of myself was take in an army tent July 1862 in the state of Georgia during the war of the rebellion - G.
Member Battery C 1st OVLA on the back of the mat is engraved on top the words soldier boy on left side reads G. Wintersteen on the bottom reads Taken 1862 and on the right side reads Battery? 1st OVLA inside the case itself in pencil reads taken in a tent in sate? Of Georgia 1862 The question marks are because I can't make out the words..The case is in beautiful shape and has the design chess players depicted on it. I took the best picture I could of engraving on brass mat.. It's much easier to see in person.
