No backspring, a simple common knife. The most important attribute to the knife is the original owner's name is inscribed on one side of then handle, with the unit's ID on the opposite. Very likely could have been a gift piece, being the name is a Reverend. Patterson" on one side, "3 NC Inf on the opposite; obviously the Third North Carolina Infantry.

Doing a quick look up right now on the online Civil War Archive we find the following to match up. 3rd Regiment, North Carolina Infantry. There is some pitting to the blade from age, as well as some discoloration to the iron pins on the handle. The handle has numerous areas of loss to both sides. Brass hardware also has some nicks at areas. Again these are all age appropriate wear and oxidation; overall the piece is in about fair condition. Measures just under 3 3/4" closed and 6 1/4" open.
