CIVIL War Clarksburg West Virginia 86th Ohio Soldier Letter 1862

An Original Civil War letter from Private John A Field, of company K, 86th Ohio Volunteers at Camp Burns, Clarksburg, (West) Virginia, July 7th, 1862 to "Friend Sarah", reports he had been teaching music in Strongsville, Ohio, and succeeded first rate but when the last call for troops came he enlisted and is now in Co K, 86th Regiment, Ohio Volunteers, at present encamped at Clarksburg and he is now busy as drum major of the regiment, having charge of the regimental band. He likes camp life "first rate:", you'd hardly know me, I don't look like the little boy in So. The weather is warm and has made a lot of the men sick but he is well. He sees from the Greenfield paper that Erasmus is in the army.

Father wishes he were back in Massachusetts. He asks about girl friends, and asks who plays the melodeon at at the old church, he would like to come play it when his enlistment is up. He can see the house on old Sugar Loaf looming toward the heavens. When you write address it to me, John a Fiel, Company K, 86th Regiment OOVI, Clarksburg, Virginia, Care of Captain Moderwell (Erastus C Moderwell, 6th OVI and 12th Ohio Cavalry), and ends "with kind regards "Johnnie", and a postscript- he mentions "Poulton and sends his regards.
