An Original Civil War Confederate Mother's Letter from "Margaret:" at "Charlestown", Jan 10th (1864 or 65) to her cousin DR John McCalla, Jr, mentions her sons-the oldest, Charlie who is 23 and twice wounded and in the hospital, her next son is serving with General (Thomas L) Rosser in the cavalry and her littlest son "lost his arm just below the shoulder and is not in the ranks, but he "bears this misfortune like a man, She mentions her brother "who speaks kindly of you" has gone to North Carolina, She writes an affectionate letter and mentions neighbor Edward Gallop, asks of the particulars of her old friend and thanks him for his kind offer to assist her but hardly thinks she would be permitted to receive any favors from "Over the Line". Dr John Moore McCalla, Jr served as US Army assistant surgeon in the US Army at Seminary Hospital, Georgetown, 1863-4 and then the US General Hospital, Washington, 1864-65. Pp ink, 8 x 5. Minor age stain, edge wear, Overall VG. NOTE: Any repair to a paper item is listed.
